Welcome to Ms Schleppe's English class.
No matter what grade you're in, there are somethings that are good for everyone to know.
1. In my class, we practice formative assessment. That means that not everything you do will be for marks; some of it will be for the sake of practicing and receiving feedback before you attempt something new for marks. Because of this, EVERYONE does EVERY ASSIGNMENT.
Late assignments will only be graded (no feedback provided) when the student gives up a lunch hour as a consequence. Missing assignments result in an "I" on the report card (yes, even one missing assignment) until all work is complete.
Also, because it is very hard to be accurate with a hundred-point scale, the grading scale is as follows:
Beginning - = 0, Beginning = 30, Beginning + = 45
Developing - = 55, Developing = 60, Developing + = 67
Accomplished - = 70, Accomplished = 75, Accomplished + = 80
Exemplary - = 86, Exemplary = 93, Exemplary + = 100.
Please note that grade 12's will also use the provincial 6-point scale.
As well, grades will be a reflection of the most consistent and current data, not the result of addition and averaging.
2. "Never trust anyone who has not brought a book with them." - Lemony Snicket. Silent reading is a valued and integral part of this course. Be prepared to read... often.
3. "We shall win only by working together!" - Eyadema
Expect to collaborate with others frequently. There is great evidence in the benefits of working with and learning from others.
4. "Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference." - Chruchill.
Show up with a positive attitude, a willingness to try, and belief that you can and will do well!
